Woah! This thing is so cool. If
you thought this was going to be
another trip to hell and back, like
Dirt, you'd be{4 REALLY {5wrong. This is
Alice In Chains at their very best,
they play their instruments rather
than beating the crap out of them and
the vocals are exceptional!
Alice In Chains have been dumped on
the Grunge bandwagon, this double
mini-album proves that they're so much
more.
Sap is a five track mini album,
previously only available on import.
It was originally released back in
1992 in the US, but only in very small
quantities. Most of the tracks have
been put out in this country as
B-sides or whatever on last year's
singles. The only other track is
undocumented and is more of a
piss-take than anything else.
{ta{5All of the songs are written by
guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell (the
original grunge goatie owner!) and
they're all performed by Alice In
Chains, except for one. "Right Turn"
is performed by Alice Mudgarden, a
collaboration between Alice In Chains,
Mudhoney and Soundgarden (sort of like
the Silents/Crionics collaboration in
Hardwired!). Listening to the songs
on Sap is so relaxing, it's probably
the most mellow thing I own.
Rather than being the follow up to
Dirt, Jar Of Flies is the follow up to
Sap. It's as if there's the heavy
metal Alice In Chains who released the
two great albums Facelift and Dirt,
and the acoustic, delicate Alice In
Chains who released these two minis.
There isn't a bad track on Jar Of
Flies, there isn't a heavy one either.
Tracks like "Rotten Apple", "No
Excuses" and "Don't Follow" are just
excellent. You can tell that there's
been a lot of effort put into making
these tracks feel right, and just as
much has been put into the sound.
Alice In Chains have always had great
harmonies in their songs, mainly down
to Jerry Cantrell, and this mini-album
is no exception. There are only seven
tracks on Jar Of Flies, five on Sap.
For those of you who can't add up,
that makes eleven, er, no, twelve. If
you shop around, you can get the two
for about ten quid, cheaper than most
albums and just as many tracks.
{ta
{5I'm not sure what the grunge world's
coming to. Nirvana have got a cello
on a couple of the tracks on "In
Utero", Alice In Chains have got
violins throughout the track "I'll
Stay Away" and then there's the
Smashing Pumpkins. If you want
grunge/metal then buy Dirt or
Nevermind or something similar. If
you want an album that you can really
sit down and listen to, buy this, it's
superb.
